Natural Fabric Dyeing with Nettles

For Easter we have tried this recipe for natural dyeing eggs. The colouring is suitable for fabrics as well if you want a brown hue.

With the humble nettle plant however you get softer, greenish-grey color. The more plants you use, the stronger hue you get. It is a beautiful way to liven up your bedding for example and add some natural, rustic touch.

Don your gloves, grab your cotton fabric and let's get started!

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to do it.

Materials needed:

  • Fresh nettles (enough to cover your fabric)
  • Cotton or linen fabric
  • Large pot
  • Water
  • White vinegar
  • Strainer or colander
  • Gloves
  • Stirring spoon
  • Stove

Instructions:

  1. Gather fresh nettles. Wear gloves while handling the nettles to avoid stings.
  2. Wash the cotton fabric to remove any dirt or residue. You can also soak the fabric in a mixture of warm water and vinegar to help the dye adhere better.
  3. Fill a large pot with enough water to cover your fabric. Bring the water to a boil.
  4. Add the nettles to the boiling water. Let the nettles simmer for about an hour or more. You can leave it cool over night and it will be even darker.
  5. Use a strainer or colander to remove the nettles from the water.
  6. Add a cup of white vinegar to the water and stir.
  7. Add the cotton fabric to the pot, making sure it is fully submerged in the water. Let the fabric simmer in the dye bath for at least an hour or more if you want darker color.
  8. Turn off the heat and let the fabric cool in the dye bath. Once the water has cooled down, remove the fabric from the pot.
  9. Rinse the fabric under cool water until the water runs clear. You can put it in the washing machine to rinse and remove any excess water.
  10. Hang the fabric to dry in a shaded area, away from direct sunlight.

Your cotton fabric should now have a beautiful green color from the nettles! Keep in mind that natural dyes may fade over time, so be sure to wash your fabric gently and avoid exposing it to direct sunlight.
